Background
Which places around London’s Royal Docks do you think would be of interest to young people? Some you may guess, others might surprise you. From London City Airport to the Garden Café, Newham teenagers have given their views on where they really like to go, and what they feel is good about this area.
The Royal Docks is a key site of renewal and cultural heritage within the developing London Thames Gateway region. Over the next few years the area will witness rapid changes as massive regeneration takes effect. Participants in this project have taken a critical look at their own neighbourhoods in this slice of time between a momentous historical past and future transformation.
Supported by arts and media professionals, university undergraduates and their teachers, the young people involved have used newly acquired skills to record and document their findings for this web site. Through their work of representing and framing their experience, local youth have in effect co-created their own heritage for others to experience.
Production work has been linked to the Cascade mentoring programme run by cSPACE arts organisation. Cascade enables a transfer of skills, knowledge and experience through different levels of education from university to college to schools, supported by local centres of arts, heritage and industry. In this way positive learning experiences are created for all involved, whilst enabling young people to make public comment on issues of regeneration that will affect their future lives.
